La Liga, at week twenty-four began with a 3-0 home win for Girona over Leganes on Friday. Saturday, Las Palmas lost at home 1-2 to Sevilla, Eibar did the same 0-2 to Barcelona, Malaga also lost at home 1-2 to Valencia, and Alaves won 1-0 at home over Deportivo.
On Sunday Real Sociedad won 3-0 over visiting Levante, Atletico Madrid won 2-0 over visitors Athletic Bilbao, Espanyol was held to a 1-1 home draw by Villarreal, and Real Madrid continued their scoring ways (and conceding goals) in a 5-3 away win over Betis. Monday, Getafe won 3-0 at home over Celta Vigo.
La Liga’s week twenty-four culminated with Barcelona on top of the table with 62 points, followed by Atletico with 55, Real Madrid with 48, and Valencia with 46. Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez still led the top scorers board with 20 and 17 goals respectively.
The runaway Barcelona locomotive seems undeterred by all other goings on while Valencia, Sevilla, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid continue to vie for the other three Champions League spots. Messi and Suarez who have not scored in La Liga in a couple of matches now are due to do so in the next match against recently promoted Girona, but don’t count the newcomers out yet. Cristiano Ronaldo has just joined the top five in the scorers table and seems to be rounding into scoring form in all competitions.
Next week will be a chance to cement positions as the dwellers of the top of the table have matches they should win. It will be interesting to see how the likes of Barcelona and Real, for instance, manage their rosters over multiple games played in a short period, when some are critical and others not so much.
