La Liga at week twenty-six saw all games played before the weekend. On Tuesday, Espanyol got a last gasp, 93-minute winner at the Camp Nou, defeating the defending champions 1-0, to further cement Real Madrid’s La Liga decline. In the day’s other game, Girona defeated visiting Celta Vigo 1-0. On Wednesday, Malaga lost at home 0-1 to Sevilla, Getafe won 3-0 over visiting Deportivo, Athletic Bilbao drew 1-1 with visitors Valencia, Atletico Madrid won 4-0 at home to Leganes, and host Eibar defeated Villarreal 1-0. On Thursday, Real Betis and Real Sociedad drew 0-0, Las Palmas held visiting table leaders Barcelona to a 1-1 draw, and host Alaves defeated Levante 1-0.
The top of the table tightened with Barcelona (66 points) but five points ahead of Atletico Madrid (61) prior to their Sunday clash at the Camp Nou. Real Madrid, in third place at 51 points, remained one point ahead of Valencia (50). Barcelona’s Lionel Messi remained atop the scoring table with 23 goals, followed by teammate Luis Suarez at 20, and Celta Vigo’s Iago Aspas (16), and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo (14).
The most intriguing news of the round continued to be Real Madrid’s La Liga decline ahead of their Champions League clash with PSG, Girona’s continued excellence, Barcelona’s unassailable lead, and yet the uncertainty from week to week about what unexpected team will topple what other top team in a given game.
