La Liga’s twenty-eighth week saw Girona defeat visiting Deportivo 2-0 on Friday while Real Madrid won away to Eibar 2-1 on Saturday thanks to two pretty Cristiano Ronaldo goals. Also on Saturday, Valencia won 2-0 away to Sevilla, Levanted won 1-0 away to Getafe, and Barcelona, without Lionel Messi (who was away for the birth of his third son) hopped on the shoulders of scorers Luis Suarez (15th), and Philippe Coutinho (28th), with the help of Ousmane Dembele (who provided superb wing play) to defeat hosts Malaga 2-0.
On Sunday, Espanyol defeated visiting Real Sociedad 2-1, Atletico Madrid played poor hosts to Celta Vigo, beating them 3-0 and Villarreal defeated hosts Las Palmas 2-0. As of this writing Athletic Bilbao had yet to play hosts to Leganes and Alaves and Real Betis were due to meet on Monday.
Those missing matches notwithstanding, Barcelona remained top of the table with 72 points, followed by Atletico Madrid at 64, Real Madrid at 57, and Valencia with 57, rounding out the Champions League top for spots. Sevilla (46), Villarreal (44), and still surprising Girona (43) ended the round in fifth through seventh places respectively.
Barcelona’s Messi (24) and Suarez (21) topped the scorers’ table while Real Madrid’s Ronaldo (18), Celta Vigo’s Iago Aspas (16) and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann (16), rounded out the top five.
On Tuesday Sevilla will play away to Manchester United in the Champions League with an aggregate first leg score of 0-0, while Barcelona play hosts to Chelsea on Wednesday, in a match that will also decide the pairing as they drew 1-1 in the first leg.
