Today, at Juventus Stadium, in Turin, Italy, in the first leg of their 2017-18 Champions League quarterfinals tie, Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo scored a super-human bicycle kick goal, one of the great goals of our sport, against Juventus, leaving keeper Gianluigi Buffon flat footed and effectively burying the home team’s hopes of advancing.
The goal, from the 33-year-old Portuguese superstar, was a prodigious athletic achievement as the striker’s knee, while flying in mid air, reached the height of the closest defender’s head as he jumped to attempt a clearance, while the striker’s right foot, which struck the ball as Ronaldo was horizontal–as if lying on air–was two feet higher than that opponent’s head.

Ronaldo’s overhead kick was accomplished with his back to the goal, redirecting a Dani Carvajal cross from right to left, with contact made beyond the penalty spot.
The stadium crowd gave Ronaldo a standing ovation which the Madrid star reciprocated with a hands in prayer position gesture, followed by a hand over the heart and a thumbs up, in appreciation for their sportsmanship.
The global sports media has had this bicycle kick goal as its main trending subject for the past 18 hours running. Sports Illustrated’s Planet Futbol had it like this. ESPN FC also had it on its front page. BBC Sports had this to say. Yahoo Soccer had this coverage. While Yahoo Sports had their own collection of reactions. Fox Soccer had this comparison to offer. Finally, Marca did its own world media review of the goal’s coverage.
