La Liga at week thirty-two, saw Barcelona ever closer to claiming the domestic title, sitting at 82 points on the table with Atletico Madrid in second place at 71 points, Real Madrid third at 67, and Valencia fourth at 65. The gap between these four teams is similar to the one between the Champions League slot holders and fifth place Real Betis at 52. Newly promoted Girona is in 8th place never having left the upper half or the group of top ten teams for most of their first season in La Liga.
On Friday, Girona lost 0-1 at home to Real Betis. On Saturday, Sevilla and Villarreal played a red-card infested match the resulted in a 2-2 draw. Barcelona defeated visiting Valencia 2-1 to earn the Catalans their 39th consecutive non-losing match, a La Liga record. Hosts Leganes defeated Celta Vigo 1-0, visiting Real Sociedad defeated La Palmas 1-0, and Deportivo defeated hosts Athletic Bilbao 3-2.
On Sunday, hosts Eibar lost to Alaves 0-1, Atletico Madrid, with Fernando Torres scoring his 100th La Liga goal, defeated visiting Levante 3-0, and Getafe beat visiting Espanyol 1-0. In the last match of the round hosts Malaga lost 1-2 to Real Madrid with Isco scoring a great free kick. Real coach Zinedine Zidane rested most of his starters for the match against the last team on the La Liga table.
At round’s end Barcelona’s Lionel Messi remained the top scorer with 29 goals, followed by his teammate Luis Suarez and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo both with 23, and Athletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann and Girona’s Iago Aspas with 19 goals apiece rounded out the top five.
