Tomorrow in Kiev, Ukraine, England’s Liverpool and Spain’s Real Madrid will play the final of the 2018 UEFA Champions League. The favored Spaniards have all the weapons to win, the underdog English side are well poised to succeed. If they both deploy their best players in their most productive formations, Madrid should add another cup to their trophy case. But, if Real coach Zinedine Zidane feels the need to imprint his season-long, misguided, idiosyncratic vision, then Liverpool will become the favorites.
Quite simply with Keylor Navas in goal, a defense with Marcelo, Sergio Ramos,Varane, and Dani Carvajal, a midfield with Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Asension or Isco, and Luka Modric, and an offense with Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, Real should be unbeatable.
This is Madrid’s championship, this is the only trophy they can win this year, this is the game they have looked forward to the entire season. If Zidane fields the listed players, and lets them play their game, Real will win convincingly. If he throws a monkey wrench into the mix it will upset the apple cart, to use the most ungainly combo of phrases.
Regardless of what Jugen Klopp comes up with and what Mohamed Salah and company can do, Madrid is simply too good when they are allowed to play their game. The only way Papa can see for the English team winning is if an injury, or other unlucky break befalls Madrid and Zidane is unable to counter the miscue in a timely manner. In all events, it should be as an entertaining a final as we have seen in recent years.
