On Friday, Sevilla defeated Granada 1-0 in a hard-fought away match just five days after having beaten Espanyol 2-0 the previous Sunday. The two victories and clean sheets ensured star-crossed coach, Julen Lopetegui, had a good start to the season prior to his first home match, against Celta Vigo.
On Sunday, Barcelona won 5-2 at home over Real Betis with Antoine Griezmann taking up the slack of the missing Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, and Ousmane Dembele, to tally twice and set one goal up. Griezmann’s first goal, at the 41st minute, tied the match when Betis had taken the early lead (15th minute), and his second, a golazo at the 50th minute, put the hosts ahead to stay.
Alaves was held to a 0-0 draw against Espanyol, Mallorca lost 0-1 at home to Real Sociedad, and Atletico Madrid defeated hosts Leganes 1-0 to capture second place on the table, ahead of city-mates Real Madrid, who squandered a goal lead to allow Valladolid to draw 1-1 at the Bernabeu. Osasuna and Eibar drew 0-0, Celta Vigo, off to a decent start and looking to knock table leaders Sevilla next week, won 1-0 over visiting Valencia and Getafe were held 1-1 by Athletic Bilbao. Levante defeated visitors Villarreal 2-1.
At this early stage, six players have two goals a piece to co-lead the scorers’ table. Sevilla’s Vitolo, a seasoned 29-year-old performer, used as a substitute this weekend, followed in the footsteps of super substitute, 38-year-old Aritz Aduriz, both scoring important winning goals to give their teams early leads in the domestic competition.
