As we reach the FIFA break, Real Madrid’s 4-2 home win over Granada on Saturday kept the Merengues in first place on the La Liga table, and as the only undefeated side in Spanish domestic league play this season. Karim Benzema at the second minute, Eden Hazard at the 45+1, Luka Modric at the 61, and James Rodriguez at the 90+2 rounded out the scoring for the hosts.
On Friday Real Betis were held 1-1 at home by Eibar while on Saturday Leganes lost at home to Levante, Valencia defeated visiting Alaves 2-1 and Osasuna did the same by the same score with Villarreal.
Sunday, hosts Mallorca defeated Espanyol 2-0, Celta Vigo won 1-0 at home over Athletic Bilbao, Valladolid held visiting Atletico to a 0-0 draw. Real Sociedad lost 1-2 a home to Getafe, while Barcelona won 4-0 at home but ended the match with nine men on the pitch when Araujo at the 87th and Dembele at the 88th were sent off. Luis Suarez at the 27th and Lionel Messi at the 78th provided beautiful bookend scores to highlight the Catalan victory which also included several early Sevilla misses and Marc-Andre ter Stegen super saves together with a couple of post saves.
The results, going into the FIFA break left Real atop the table with 18 points followed by Barcelona at 16, Atletico Madrid at 15, and Granada at 14 holding down the four Champions League slots.
Real Betis’ Loren Moron, Real Madrid’s Benzema, and Villarreal’s Gerard Moreno, all at six goals and an assist, top the scorers’ table.
FIFA break Euro Qualifiers
The FIFA break presents a number of great encounters including UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers. Croatia v Hungary and the Netherlands v Northern Ireland are on tap on October 10th. On the 11th, the Czech Republic and England meet as do Iceland and France. On the 12th, Italy and Greece face off and Norway and Spain battle. On the 13th, Belarus and the Netherlands contend, Gareth Bale’s Wales and Luka Modric’s Croatia play each other. On October 14th France and Turkey and Ukraine and Portugal take top billing and on the 15th Sweden v Spain and Ireland Republic v Switzerland take place.
