USA La Liga broadcasting rights
Fox Sports has recently sewn up English broadcasting rights to the 2021 and 2024 Copa America football tourneys, while ESPN beat out BeIn Sports to cover La Liga beginning in August 2021 and running through 2029.
Zidane departs Real Madrid
Zinedine Zidane, in an open letter published in Madrid sports newspaper As, took a parting shot at Florentino Perez and his football club during the coach’s resignation from the club. Zidane mentioned he felt a “lack of trust” from the club’s leadership and zeroed in on detrimental “leaks to the media” as proof of the bad faith with which he felt Real Madrid had been treating him.
Carlo Ancelotti returns as Real Madrid coach
Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, yes he of Super League fame, felt it was only proper to bring back the man his newly departed coach had originally substituted for some years back and brought Carlo Ancelotti to the Bernabeu to calm the waters or at least to jump-start a new effort if not a new football era at Real Madrid.
Super League Redux
The clubs involved in the Super League seem unwilling to let go of the project if only referring obliquely to the effort as a means of addressing the sorry state football’s finances, while secondarily relaying the truth about their own financial dire straits, the double talk all along making it clear their collective and individual objective was to get themselves out of trouble not football in general out of trouble.
Brazil to host Copa America 2021
As the dust settled on the CONMEBOL merry-go-round, the Copa America 2021 hosting duties left Colombia to co-host Argentina and from there to Brazil. The newest hosts are now offering to provide governmental support to the football tourney in terms of logistics, transportation, venues, accommodations, and security. All delegations though will have to be reduced to a total of 65 members, players and staff inclusive, and all must be Covid-vaccinated.
Euro prep friendlies
In a series of football friendlies intended to provide a last-minute tune-up for their squads a number of Euro 2020 contenders were on display these past couple of weeks. Of special note were the Netherlands managing only a 2-2 draw with Scotland, England slipping by Austria and Romania both by 1-0, Germany underperforming in a 1-1 draw with Denmark, France defeating a 10-man Welsh team 3-0, and Belgium, without Kevin de Bruyne, defeating Croatia 1-0 in a match that begged for more but had most key starters for Croatia rested in the second half.
CONMEBOL resumes World Cup 2022 qualifiers
In resume World Cup 2022 qualifiers in South America, Uruguay were held 0-0 at home by Paraguay and Chile did the same to hosts Argentina in a hard-fought 1-1 draw. Colombia defeated Peru 3-0 away, while Brazil won 2-0 at home over Ecuador with an unfortunate officiating mishap at the 93rd minute (with the score 1-0 to Brazil) wherein a saved penalty off Neymar was repeated for goalkeeper advancement beyond the goal line. Unfortunately, though it seemed the transgression did occur, from several television replays shown, the action also seemed as minimally objectionable as Neymar’s stop-go penalty technique has been ruled to be, thus this football controversy was the last thing the upcoming host of Copa America needed to have happened on their soil.
